Today's carpet fibers are made to be tough, soft, and ready for real life. But even the best carpet can run into small issues, whether it's brand new or has been part of your home for years.
As your friendly flooring team, we're here to help you spot what's going on, understand why it happens, and find the right solution for your home and your family. Read on to explore the most common carpet problems, plus simple ways to fix them and keep them from coming back.
From loose fibers in your new carpet to a wine spill at the holiday table, here's what tends to come up and how to handle it.
The problem: You just brought home a beautiful new carpet, but now you're finding loose fibers in your vacuum. Don't worry, this is normal and happens with some new carpet.
The cause: During manufacturing and installation, small bits of fiber can come loose and sit on the surface. Newer carpet technology has cut down on shedding a lot, so any you see should be minimal.
The solution: Shedding usually fades with a little time and regular vacuuming. Vacuum two or three times a week for the first few months, and the loose fibers will clear out on their own. If you see a single tuft sticking up above the rest, snip it level with scissors. Never pull it, since that can loosen nearby fibers.
The problem: Think of matting as another word for crushing or flattening. Your carpet once felt plush and full, but now it looks thin and pressed down, especially in high-traffic areas like hallways and in front of the couch.
The cause: Matting happens when carpet fibers lose their shape and twist, so they get crushed more easily. Heavy foot traffic, heavy furniture, and vacuuming or cleaning the wrong way can all speed things up.
The solution:
If your carpet is past the point of fluffing back up, it may be time to look at newer styles built to hold their shape in busy spaces. Our carpet buying guide walks you through fiber types and styles that fit the way your family lives.
The problem: Your carpet is starting to fray or come apart. It might be one small spot, or you might notice it along edges, seams, or larger areas.
The cause: Fraying often shows up in older carpet after years of foot traffic. It can also happen when a vacuum's beater bar catches a loose loop, or when pets scratch at the same spot.
The solution: For a single snag, trim it level with sharp scissors instead of pulling it. If the damage is spread out, you may want to have new carpet installed. If your carpet is newly installed and you're seeing fraying at the seams, reach out to your installer so they can take a look and handle the carpet repair.
The problem: Your carpet has a bump, wave, or ripple running across the room, like something is pushing it up from underneath. Besides looking messy, carpet ripples and wrinkles can be a tripping hazard and can wear down faster than the flat areas around them.
The cause: There are a few common reasons carpet buckling happens:
The solution: The most reliable fix is re-stretching, which is when a professional uses a power stretcher to pull the carpet tight across the whole room, then re-secures it to the tack strips and trims any extra.
For a small ripple near a wall, a tool called a knee kicker can sometimes nudge the carpet back into place. Still, a knee kicker isn't made to stretch a whole room, and using it the wrong way can damage the carpet backing.
If the ripples are large, keep coming back, or show up in brand-new carpet, call your installer or a local flooring pro to find the best solution.
The problem: Life happens. Coffee gets bumped, kids drop juice, and pets have accidents.
The cause: Liquids soak down into carpet fibers and sometimes the backing. The longer a spill sits, the more it sets in, which is why old stains are harder to remove than fresh ones.
The solution: Here's a simple carpet stain removal routine that works for most fresh spills:
Different stains need a slightly different approach:
Expert Tip: always test carpet cleaner or home remedy on a small, hidden spot first, and check your carpet's care guide, since some cleaners can affect your warranty. For stubborn stains that won't budge, professional cleaners usually use hot water extraction, which reaches deeper than most home methods.
The problem: Your carpet looks spotless, but there's still a smell or a hint of pet odor that hangs around no matter how often you vacuum.
The cause: Odors usually come from moisture, pet accidents, or spills that soaked into the carpet backing or carpet pad.
The solution: Sprinkle baking soda over the area, let it sit for several hours or overnight, then vacuum it up. For pet odors, an enzyme-based odor remover works best. If a smell keeps coming back, moisture may be trapped underneath, so it's worth having a pro check it out.
